Question

A steel is 1 m long and 1mm2 in area of cross-section .If it takes 200 N to stretch this wire by 1 mm , how much force will be required to stretch a wire of the same material as well as diameter from its normal length of 10 m to a length of 1002 cm ?
  1. 2000 N
  2. 400 N
  3. 1000 N
  4. 200 N

A
1000 N
B
400 N
C
2000 N
D
200 N
Solution
Verified by Toppr

The correct option is C 400 N
Given, A steel wire Length (L)=1m Area (A)=1mm2=1×106m2 - it takes 200 N and ΔL=1 mm=103 m From above data,
Young modulus = stress strain =FLAΔL=200×1106×103y=2×1011 N/m2
when L=10 mΔL=2 cm=0.02 mF=? we know y=F L AΔLF=y AΔLL=2×1011×106×0.0210F=400 N
