Question

(a) Three resistors 1Ω,2Ω and 3Ω are combined in series. What is the total resistance of the combination?
(b) If the combination is connected to a battery of emf 12 V and negligible internal resistance, obtain the potential drop across each resistor.

Solution
Verified by Toppr

(a)
Equivalent resistance is
Req=R1+R2+R3=(1+2+3)Ω=6Ω

(b)
Current in the circuit is given by I=ER
I=126=2Ω
Potential drop across 1Ω, V1=IR1=2×1=2V
Potential drop across 2Ω,V2=IR2=2×2=4V
Potential drop across 3Ω,V3=IR3=2×3=6V
