Question

(a) Three resistors 2Ω,4Ω and 5Ω are combined in parallel. What is the total resistance of the combination?
(b) If the combination is connected to a battery of emf 20 V and negligible internal resistance, determine the current through each resistor, and the total current drawn from the battery.

Solution

(a) For Parallel connection,
1Rp=1R1+1R2+1R3
1Rp=12+14+15
1Rp=10+5+420
Rp=2019Ω

(b) R1=2Ω,R2=4Ω,R3=5Ω
I1=VR1=20/2=10A
I2=VR2=20/4=5A
I3=VR3=20/5=4A
Total current = I1+I2+I3=19A
