Question

A train stops at two stations P and Q which are 2 km apart, It accelerates uniformly from P at 1ms2 for 15 seconds and maintains a constant speed for a time before decelerating uniformly to rest at Q. If the deceleration is 0.5ms2, find the time for which the train is travelling at a constant speed.

  4. 111sec

A
131sec
B
29.16sec
C
111sec
D
121sec
Solution

Solution
For first 15s
v=u+at [Isteqn of motion]
v=(0)+2×15
v=30m/s
when train is decelerating
v=u+at
(0)=(30)12t
t=60s
In first case
v2u2=2as1 [3rdeqn of motion]
(30)2(0)=2(2)s1
225m=s1
In third case
(0)2(30)2=2(1/2)s3
900=s3
So, in second case when
speed is constant :
s2=2000s1+s2
s2=2000900225
s2=875m
s2=vt′′
t′′=s2v=87530=29.16s

A train starts from rest and accelerates uniformly at a rate of 2 ms2 for 10s. It then maintains a constant speed for 200s. The brakes are then applied and the train is uniformly retarded and comes to rest in 50s. Find the total distance travelled.

Between the two stations, a train uniformly accelerates from rest at first, then moves with constant velocity and finally decelerates uniformly to come to rest. If the ratio of the time taken is 1:8:1 and the maximum speed attained is 60 km/h, then what is the average speed over the whole journey?

P and Q are two railways stations which are 560 km apart. An express train leaves stations P to stations Q at a speed of 55 km/hr and a passenger train leaves station Q to station P at a speed of 25 km/hr, both at the same time. Find when and where will the both trains meet.

A train starts from rest and accelerate uniformly at the rate of 2 m/s2 for 10 s. It then maintains a constant speed for 200 seconds. The brakes are then applied on the train is uniformly retarded and comes to rest in 50 seconds. Find:
1) The maximum velocity reached
2) The retardation in the last 50 seconds.
