Question

A watch glass containing some powdered substance is placed between the pole pieces of a magnet. Deep concavity is observed at the center. The substance in the watch glass is (assume poles are far)

  1. iron
  2. carbon
  3. wood
  4. chromium

A
carbon
B
chromium
C
wood
D
iron
Solution
Verified by Toppr

Fill in the blanks in the following passage(s) from the words given above.

A magnet ........1......... small pieces of iron, nickel, cobalt. etc. The magnetic force of attraction is maximum in small regions near the ends of the magnet. These are called the ........2........of the magnet.
A freely suspended magnet always points in ......3...... direction. The end pointing towards north is called north seeking pole or north pole. The other end which points towards south is called south seeking pole or south pole. All magnets attract ...........4.......... poles of other magnets and also a few substances like iron, nickel and cobalt. Thus if an unknown substance is attracted by a magnet, we cannot be sure whether it is a magnet. But like poles of magnet ....,....5............ each other. Hence if there is repulsion between an unknown substance and a magnet, we can be sure that the unknown substance is a magnet. The substances which are attracted by magnets are called ......6...... substances.
