Question

A water tanker filled up to 23 of its height is moving with a uniform speed. On sudden application of the brake, the water in the tank would:
  1. move backward.
  2. move forward.
  3. be unaffected.
  4. rise upwards.

A
move backward.
B
be unaffected.
C
rise upwards.
D
move forward.
Solution
Verified by Toppr

As per Newton's first law of motion or law of inertia, any object keeps moving in the same direction with the same speed as long as no external force is applied to it. In this case, water will keep moving forward when brakes are applied. The tanker will stop but water will continue moving and might overflow if the tanker has no closed roof.
