Question

A zener diode voltage regulator operated in the range 120180 V produces a constant supply of 110 V and 250 mA to the load. If the maximum current is to be equally shared between the load and zener, then the values of series resistance (RS) and load resistance (RL) are:
  1. RL=70 Ω;RS=280 Ω
  2. RL=440 Ω;RS=140 Ω
  3. RL=140 Ω;RS=440 Ω
  4. RL=280 Ω;RS=70 Ω

A
RL=70 Ω;RS=280 Ω
B
RL=440 Ω;RS=140 Ω
C
RL=140 Ω;RS=440 Ω
D
RL=280 Ω;RS=70 Ω
Solution
Verified by Toppr

The resistance offered by Zener diode will be: RZ=1100.25 Ω=440 Ω

Hence, for equal current in load and Zener diode, RL=RZ=440 Ω

Now, total resistance will be: 4402+RS=RS+220

Since current through Zener diode is 0.25A, current through combination will be: 0.25 A×2=0.5 A.

Hence, for current to be maximum, the maximum voltage can be 180 V.

Therefore, 180=0.5(RS+220)

RS=140 Ω
