Question

According to Maxwell's distribution of molecular speeds , the following graph has been drawn for two different samples of gases A and B at temperature $$ T_1 $$ and $$ T_2 $$ respectively . Then give the correct set of INCORRECT
For example , if statements (1) & (2) are incorrect , then report answer as $$ ( 1 + 2) = 3 $$ .
(1) If $$ T_1 = T_2 $$ then gas B can be $$ SO_2 $$ and gas A can be $$ CO_2 $$ .
(2) If gases A and B are $$ CO_2 $$ & $$ N_2O $$ , then $$ T_1 > T_2 $$ .
(3) If $$ T_1 < T_2 , $$ then gases A and B cannot be $$ CO_2 $$ and $$ SO_2 $$ respectively
(4) None of these

Solution

At constant temperature , decreases in molecular mass causes flattening of the graph . For same molecular mass of gas , increase in temperature causes flattening of the graph .
From the above graph ,

$$ (V_{mp})_{T_1} < (V_{mp})_{T_2} $$ $$ \therefore $$ $$ \dfrac{T_1}{M_A} < \dfrac{T_2}{M_B} $$ $$ \therefore $$ $$ \dfrac{T_2}{T_1} > \dfrac{M_B}{M_A} $$

But , $$ \dfrac{M_B}{M_A} $$ may be less than or greater than $$1$$ .

$$ \therefore $$ Statements $$ (1) , (2) $$ & $$ (3) $$ are wrong . $$ \therefore $$ Reported answer = $$ 1 + 2 + 3 = 6 $$
