Question

Al+MnO4Al(OH)4+MnO2
For this reaction, element X is reduced and element Y is oxidised. Then X and Y are respectively:
  1. Al and Mn
  2. Al and Al
  3. Mn and Al
  4. Mn and Mn

A
Al and Mn
B
Mn and Al
C
Al and Al
D
Mn and Mn
Solution
Verified by Toppr

In the reaction the Al is changing to Al(OH)4 . Its oxidation state is changing from 0 to +3. Increase in oxidation state indicates the element is oxidized,
And MnO4 is converting to MnO2. Its oxidation state is changing from +7 to +4. A decrease in oxidation state indicates the element is reduced.
Thus for this reaction, the element X is Mn which is reduced and the element Y is Al which is oxidized.
