Alginic acid is also called as Algin or Alginate. It is an anionic and hydrophilic polysaccharide present in the cell walls of brown algae i.e. Phaeophyceae. It is a linear copolymer made up of residues D-mannuronic acid and L-glucuronic acid. In brown algae, the cell wall consists of cellulose and alginic acid. Cellulosic wall is covered from outside by a gelatinous coating of Algin.
