Question

Among the following, the species with one unpaired electron are:
  1. O+2
  2. B2
  3. NO
  4. O2

A
O+2
B
NO
C
O2
D
B2
Solution
Verified by Toppr

(i) O+2 & NO both contain same no. of electrons and will have same electronic configuration. Total e = 15 configuration: σ21s,σ21s,σ22sσ22s,σ22pz,(Π2px2Π2py2),(Π2px1Π2py) O+2 & NO contain 1 unpaired electron. (ii) O2 has a total of 17 e configuration: σ21s,σ21s,σ22s,σ22s,σ22pz,(Π2px2Π2py2),(Π2px2Π2py1) O2 contains 1 unpaired electron. (iii) B2 contains even number of electrons so it cannot contain 1 unpaired electron. Either there will be no unpaired electrons or 2 unpaired electrons but cannot have 1 unpaired electron.
