Question

An electric dipole is placed at an angle of 30o with an electric field intensity 2×105 N/C. It experiences a torque equal to 4 Nm. The charge on the dipole, if the dipole length is 2 cm, is :
  1. 7μC
  2. 8mC
  3. 2mC
  4. 5μC

A
7μC
B
2mC
C
8mC
D
5μC
Solution
Verified by Toppr

Step 1: Dipole moment of dipole
Given the dipole length l=2 cm=2/100 m

So, the Dipole moment of dipole will be
P=lq =(2/100)q
P=0.02q

Step 2: Torque acting on dipole
τ=P×E
τ=PEsinθ
Or, 4 Nm=(0.02q)(2×105 N/C)sin30o

Or, q=200×105C =2mC

Hence, Option C is correct
