Question

An electric dipole is placed at the centre of a sphere. Select the correct option. (More than one option may be correct)
  1. The flux of the electric field through the sphere is zero
  2. The electric field is zero at every point of the sphere
  3. The electric field is zero on a circle on the sphere
  4. The electric field is not zero anywhere on the sphere

A
The electric field is zero on a circle on the sphere
B
The electric field is zero at every point of the sphere
C
The flux of the electric field through the sphere is zero
D
The electric field is not zero anywhere on the sphere
Solution
Verified by Toppr

The electric dipole contain two equal and opposite charge. So total charge is zero inside the sphere. Apply Gauss's law, the flux,ϕ=Qenϵ0 where Qen is the charge enclosed by the sphere. i.e Qen=0 so ϕ=0.
The electric field is the resultant field effect due to all charge. So the filed is not zero inside sphere or any other point on the sphere.

Given below are two statements.

Statement I : An electric dipole is placed at the centre of a hollow sphere. The flux of electric field through the sphere is zero, but electric field is not zero anywhere in the sphere.

Statement II : If R is the radius of a solid metallic sphere and Q be the total charge on it. The electric field at a point on the spherical surface of radius r (<R) is zero, but the electric flux passing through this closed spherical surface of radius r is not zero.

In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below.
