Question

An experiment is performed to find the refractive index of glass using a travelling microscope. In this experiment distances are measured by
  1. a meter scale provided on the microscope
  2. a standard laboratory scale
  3. a screw gauge provided on the microscope
  4. a vernier scale provided on the microscope

A
a screw gauge provided on the microscope
B
a vernier scale provided on the microscope
C
a meter scale provided on the microscope
D
a standard laboratory scale
Solution
Verified by Toppr

The travelling microscope usually used has each mm divided equally into two halves. So the smallest division on main scale will be 0.5 mm. There are 50 divisions on the vernier scale.i.e it has vernier scale divisions so readings would be taken through it. Hence correct answer is C.
