In an aquatic ecosystem, producers are the phytoplankton that have the least biomass and this value gradually shows an increase towards the apex of the pyramid. Zooplankton are primary consumers with slightly higher biomass, followed by small fishes and larger fishes. Larger fishes that form the peak of the pyramid have a very high biomass compared to the producers in the ecosystem. This makes the marine ecosystem an inverted pyramid of biomass.
