Question

An unknown inorganic compound (X) loses its water of crystallisation. On heating its aqueous solution gives the following reacion:
(i) it gives a white turbidity with dilute HCl solution.
(ii) it decolourises a solution of iodine in KI.
(iii) it gives a white precipitate with AgNO3 solution which turns black on standing.
Identify compound (X)?
  1. X=Na2S2O3.6H2O
  2. X=Na2S2O3.4H2O
  3. X=Na2S2O3.5H2O
  4. none of these

A
X=Na2S2O3.4H2O
B
X=Na2S2O3.5H2O
C
none of these
D
X=Na2S2O3.6H2O
Solution

Since the compound X decolourize a solution of iodine in KI, it should contain thiosulphate ion, S2O23 which also gives white turbidity with HCl and white precipitate with AgNO3. Hence the X is Sodium thiosulphate Na2S2O3.5H2O.
Na2S2O3.5H2OHeatNa2S2O3+5H2O
Na2S2O3+HCl2NaCl+H2O+SO2+S(white turbidity)
Na2S2O3+I2Na2S4O6+2NaI
Na2S2O3+AgNO3Ag2S2O3(White ppt)+NaNO3
Ag2S2O3+H2OAg2S(Black ppt)+H2SO4
