The popular 'Chipko Andolan' was started in 1973 in Gopeshwar, Uttarakhand. The villagers under the leadership of Sundar Lal Bahuguna who pledged that they would not permit any more falling of trees. A group of women of Reni village also stopped the contractor from cutting the trees by hugging the trees, whenever they were tried to cut. They protected the forests near their village.
Thus, the assertion is true but the reason is false.
