Biosphere reserves are multipurpose protected areas, which are meant for preserving genetic diversity in representative ecosystems of various natural biomes and unique biological communities by protecting wildlife, traditional lifestyle of tribals and domesticated plant and/ or animal genetic resources. Thus, humans are an important integral part of biosphere reserves.
Nilgiri biosphere reserve in Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu was the first to be established in the year 1986. National parks are areas maintained by the government and reserved for the betterment of wildlife. Cultivation, Grazing, forestry and habitat manipulation are not allowed.
