Question

Assertion :Br2 is oxidised to BrO3 in basic medium. Reason: When Br2 is passed into hot NaOH, it disproportionates to Br and BrO3.
  1. Both Assertion and Reason are correct and Reason is the correct explanation for Assertion
  2. Both Assertion and Reason are correct but Reason is not the correct explanation for Assertion
  3. Assertion is correct but Reason is incorrect
  4. Assertion is incorrect but Reason is correct

A
Both Assertion and Reason are correct and Reason is the correct explanation for Assertion
B
Assertion is correct but Reason is incorrect
C
Both Assertion and Reason are correct but Reason is not the correct explanation for Assertion
D
Assertion is incorrect but Reason is correct
Solution
Verified by Toppr

When Br2 is passed into hot NaOH, it disproportionates to Br and BrO3.
The oxidation number of bromine in Br2 is 0.
The oxidation number of bromine in BrO3 is +5.
The oxidation number of bromine in Br is 1.
Thus, in basic medium, Br2 is oxidized to BrO3 and at the same time, it is reduced to Br.
Hence, assertion is incorrect but Reason is correct.
