In the direct speech, the exact words of the original speaker are repeated.

Option C is correct as the question in the inverted commas is in the present perfect continuous tense and that's why 'had been searching' is used.

Options A, B, and D are wrong as 'told','said', and 'these' cannot be used respectively.
