A greenhouse gas (sometimes abbreviated $$GHG$$) is a gas that absorbs and emits radiant energy within the thermal infrared range. Greenhouse gases cause the greenhouse effect on planets. The primary greenhouse gases in Earth's atmosphere are water vapor $$(H_2O)$$, carbon dioxide $$(CO_2),$$ etc.
The gases which are transparent to sunlight and are capable of absorbing $$IR-radiation$$ and then to re-emit $$IR- radiation$$ of longer wavelengths are termed as greenhouse gases.
