Cistron refers to the continuous segment of DNA which specifies one polypeptide chain, It is the region within which mutants show a cis-trans position effect. A muton is the smallest length of DNA capable of giving rise to new form by mutation, whereas a recon is the smallest unit of DNA that gives rise to new forms by recombination.
