Question

Differentiate between regular and diffused reflection. Does diffused reflection mean the failure of the laws of reflection ?

Solution
Verified by Toppr

The light falling on a flat, smooth, reflecting surface, such as a mirror, undergoes regular reflection. Inregularreflection, aparallel beam incident ona smoothsurfacelike mirrorremainsparallel afterthe reflection. For example, in the case of the smooth lake, the crisp, clearimagesthat formare the result ofmanyparallel incident raysthat reflect as parallel reflected rays. (see image 1)
The light falling on a rough surface undergoes diffused reflection. When all the parallel rays reflected froma plane surfaceare not parallel, the reflection isknown asdiffused orirregular reflection. For example, in the case of the rough lake, the blurred images that form are the result of many parallel incident rays that are scattered after reflecting inmanydifferent directions. Thisbehaviour is called diffuse or irregular reflection. (see image 2)
The light rays strike the rough surface at many differentanglesofincidence. Thisisbecauseallthe normals.are'notparallelto each otheron therough surface. Thus, the light rays get reflectedat many differentangles.ThatIs why,the raysof reflected beambecomenon-parallel toeach other. Thus, laws of reflections are not Violated in diffused reflections.
