A large amount of carbon dioxide in the polluted air results in an increase in the greenhouse effect which has raised the average temperature of the Earth by $$ 2^{\circ}\,C $$. This results in global warming which, in turn, will melt ice on the polar caps, thereby raising the levels of seawater by a few meters. This can result in submerging of coastal areas and islands causing excessive damage.
