Question

Distance between the 1st compression and the fifth subsequent rarefaction in a longitudinal wave if the wavelength of the wave is 20cm.
  1. 90 cm
  2. 80 cm
  3. 40 cm
  4. 45 cm

A
40 cm
B
45 cm
C
80 cm
D
90 cm
Solution
Verified by Toppr

The distance between two successive compression or rarefaction is the wavelength (λ). So the distance between compression and subsequent rarefaction will be λ/2
Thus, the 1st compression and 5 th rarefaction =4λ+λ/2=9λ2=4.5(20)=90cm as (λ=20cm)
