Question

During summer, if you go near the lake, you feel relief from the heat, why?
  1. With high pressure over the lake and low pressure over land, the regional pressure gradient pushes cool winds towards the land.
  2. With no pressure over the lake and low pressure over land, the regional pressure gradient pushes cool winds towards the land.
  3. With no pressure over the lake and high pressure over land, the regional pressure gradient pushes cool winds towards the land.
  4. With high pressure over the lake and zero pressure over land, the regional pressure gradient pushes cool winds towards the land.

A
With high pressure over the lake and zero pressure over land, the regional pressure gradient pushes cool winds towards the land.
B
With high pressure over the lake and low pressure over land, the regional pressure gradient pushes cool winds towards the land.
C
With no pressure over the lake and high pressure over land, the regional pressure gradient pushes cool winds towards the land.
D
With no pressure over the lake and low pressure over land, the regional pressure gradient pushes cool winds towards the land.

During summer, there occurs differential heating of the land and the water body near the land. The land mass is heated up quickly and the air over the land rises up, creating low pressure over the land. The water body takes time in getting heated up and so during the day, the water body has higher pressure due to heavy air than the land mass. Due to the pressure difference, the wind blows from the high pressure (water body) to the low pressure (land mass). These are called the sea-breeze. These winds are colder and that's why relief is felt near the lake on a hot summer day.
Hence, the correct answer is 'with high pressure over the lake and low pressure over the land, the regional pressure gradient pushes cool winds towards the land'.

Select the correct option after reading the statements.
1) During the night, winds move from the land towards the sea.
2) During the night, the land cools down more than the sea, and hence, the land has high pressure in comparison with the sea.

Arrange the following steps in the proper order to explain how a sea breeze occurs, near coastal regions.
(a) The temperature of land rises rapidly as compared to sea, because the specific heat capacity of land is five times less than that of water.
(b) Due to the low pressure over the land mass, the cool air over the sea starts blowing towards the land.
(c) The sun shines equally on the land mass and sea, giving equal amount of heat energy to both.
(d) The air above the land becomes hot and light, rises up and hence creates the low pressure over the land.
