Question

Reason
$$ \Delta G^{\circ} $$ is +ve for electrolytic cell.
Assertion
$$E^{\circ}_{cell} $$ is negative for electrolytic cell.

A
Both Assertion and Reason are correct and Reason is the correct explanation for Assertion
B
Both Assertion and Reason are correct but Reason is not the correct explanation for Assertion
C
Assertion is correct but Reason is incorrect
D
Both Assertion and Reason are incorrect
Solution
Verified by Toppr

Correct option is A. Both Assertion and Reason are correct and Reason is the correct explanation for Assertion

In electrolytic cell, the cell reaction is non spontaneous.

ie, $$E_{cell}^{0}$$ is negative. $$\left(\because E^{\circ}\right.$$ cele $$\left.<0\right)$$

Since $$\triangle G^{\circ}$$ cell $$=-n F E^{\circ}$$ cell and $$\triangle G^{\circ}$$ cell is positive for electrolytic cell.
Thus, assertion and reason are correct and reason is the correct explanation for
assertion. So, option $$A$$ is the correct answer.
