Question

Equal moles of hydrogen and oxygen gases are placed in a container with a pin-hole through which both can escape. What fraction of the oxygen escapes in the time required for one-half of the hydrogen to escape?
  1. 1/8
  2. 1/2
  3. 1/4
  4. 3/8

A
3/8
B
1/4
C
1/2
D
1/8
Solution
Verified by Toppr

Assume 1 mole of hydrogen and 1 mole of oxygen gases are placed in a container with a pin-hole through which both can escape.

nOtHnHtO=MHMO

nO12=232

tO=tH and nH=12

nO=12×14=18
The fraction of the oxygen that escapes in the time required for one-half of the hydrogen to escape is 18

Note: Here nO represents the number of moles of oxygen effused in time tO and MO is the molar mass of oxygen.

Similarly, nH represents the number of moles of hydrogen effused in time tH and MH is the molar mass of hydrogen.

Hence, the correct option is A.
