When energy is given to the arms of a tuning fork placed in air, its arm stretches and compresses the air particles , then arm comes back and air particles expands , thus a repeating pressure change is developed there and as longitudinal wave is a pressure wave so sound (longitudinal wave) is produced due to this alternating pressure deviation in air .
