We know, the energy stored by a charge outside the sphere of radius R in medium of relative permittivity, ϵr=2.2, is given by,

E=12kQ2ϵrR

We need to find energy stored over a region of shaded area

Let a=3cm and b=5cm

Q11μC=11×106C

ϵr=2.2

k=9×109units

Required energy is given by,

Ereq=12kQ2ϵra12kQ2ϵrb

=12kQ2ϵr[1a1b]

=129×109(11×106)22.2[13×10215×102]

=9×112×2×1022×2.2×15=3.3J
