Question

Find the value of k, if x1 is a factor of p(x) in each of the following cases:
(i) p(x)=x2+x+k
(ii) p(x)=2x2+kx+2
(iii) p(x)=kx22x+1
(iv) p(x)=kx23x+k

Solution
Verified by Toppr

If x1 is the factor of the equation then put x=1 in these equation

(i) x2+x+k=0(1)2+1+k=01+1+k=0k=2

(ii) 2x2+kx+2=02(1)2+k(1)+2=02+k+2=0k=22

(iii) kx22x+1=0k(1)22(1)+1=0k2+1=0k=21

(iv) kx23x+k=0k(1)23(1)+k=0k3+k=02k=3k=32
