Question

Find X and Y in the following reaction.
C2H5OHKMnO4/H+−−−−−−−XY/H2SO4−−−−−CH3COOC2H5

  1. CH3OH,C2H5OH
  2. CH3COOH,C2H5OH
  3. CH3CHO,CH3OH
  4. CH2=CH2,CH3COOH

A
CH3OH,C2H5OH
B
CH2=CH2,CH3COOH
C
CH3COOH,C2H5OH
D
CH3CHO,CH3OH
Solution
Verified by Toppr

Oxidation of primary alcohol by potassium permanganate (KMnO4) produceS carboxylic acid.

C2H5OH+KMnO4/H+CH3COOH(X)

CH3COOH+C2H5OH(Y)/H2SO4CH3COOC2H5

The sequence of reaction is an oxidation reaction (ethanol to acetic acid) followed by an esterification (acetic acid and ethanol making ethyl acetate).

Hence, X is Acetic acid and Y is Ethyl acetate.
