Question

For a charged conductor at the surface,
  1. Electric Potential is continuous.
  2. Electric Field is continuous.
  3. Electric Field is discontinuous.
  4. Electric Potential is discontinuous.

A
Electric Field is discontinuous.
B
Electric Field is continuous.
C
Electric Potential is continuous.
D
Electric Potential is discontinuous.
Solution
Verified by Toppr

We know that electric field inside the conductor is zero, i.e, Ein=0

Field outside the conductor=Eout=Kqr2

Potential inside the conductor is constant, i.e, Vin=KqR

Potential outside the conductor=Vout=Kqr

Therefore, the electric field is discontinuous and potential is continuous across the surface of the charged conductor.
