Question

For a prism of refracting angle A and refractive index 2. Assume rays are incident at all angles of incidence 0oi90o. Ignore partial reflection

Solution
Verified by Toppr

Using sinθc=1n2
θc=30o (As n2=2)
Here θc=r2
This suggests that
1) if r2=30o, then the ray will graze on the face LN of the prism.
2) if r2<30o, then the ray will always be refracted from the face LN.
3) if r2>30o, then always total internal reflection will occur.
Using snell' law for face LM, 1×sini=2sinr1
Thus for 0oi90o,0or130o
As A=r1+r2
Now for Case A; A=15o
r1+r2=15o0or215o
Hence all the rays will refract into the air.
For Case B; A=45o
r1+r2=45o15or2<45o
Hence some rays will refract and some will reflect.
For Case C; A=70o
r1+r2=70o40or2<70o
Hence all the rays will be reflected back from face LN.
For Case D; A=50o
r1+r2=50o20or2<50o
Hence some rays will refract and some will reflect.

A ray R1 is incident on the plane surface of the glass slab (kept in air) of refractive index 2 at an angle of incidence equal to the critical angle for this air glass system. The refracted ray R2 undergoes partial reflection and refraction at the other surface. The angle between reflected ray R3 and the refracted ray R4 at that surface is :
