Question

For the β+ (positron) emission from a nucleus, there is another competing process known as electron capture (electron from an inner orbit, say, the K shell, is captured by the nucleus and a neutrino is emitted).
e++AZXAZ1Y+v
Show that if β+ emission is energetically allowed, electron capture is necessarily allowed but not vice versa.

Solution
Verified by Toppr

Consider the competing processes:
AZWAZ1Y+e++ve+Q1 (positron cature)
e+AZWAZ1Y+ve+Q2 (electron capture)

Q1=[mN(AZX)mN(AZ1Y)me]c2
=[mN(AZX)Zmem(AZ1Y)(Z1)meme]c2
=[mN(AZX)mN(AZ1Y)2me]c2

Q2=[mN(AZX)+memN(AZ1Y)]c2=[m(AZX)m(AZ1Y)]c2
This means Q1>0 implies Q2>0, but Q2>0 does not necessarily mean Q1>0.

For the (positron) emission from a nucleus, there is another competing process known as electron capture (electron from an inner orbit, say, the K−shell, is captured by the nucleus and a neutrino is emitted).

Show that if emission is energetically allowed, electron capture is necessarily allowed but not vice−versa.
