Question

For the gas phase reaction
PCl5(g)PCl3(g)+Cl2(g)
Which of the following conditions are correct ?
  1. ΔH<0andΔS<0
  2. ΔH>0andΔS<0
  3. ΔH>0andΔS>0
  4. ΔH=0andΔS<0

A
ΔH>0andΔS<0
B
ΔH=0andΔS<0
C
ΔH>0andΔS>0
D
ΔH<0andΔS<0
Solution
Verified by Toppr

Given gas phase reaction is :-
PCl5(g)PCl3(g)+Cl2(g)
we know that,
H=H+ngRT
Here H= Erthalpy change of reaction
E= internal energy change of reaction
ng= difference in no. of moles of gaseous products and reactants.
Here, ng=1+11=1>0
so, H>0
& S= S product - Sreactant >0
