Question

From point A located on a highway (shown in figure above) one has to get by car as soon as possible to point B located in the field at a distance l from the highway. It is known that the car moves in the field η times slower than on the highway. At a distance CD=xlη21 from point D one must turn off the highway. Find x.

Let the car turn off the highway at a distance x from the point D. So, CD=x, and if the speed of the car in the field is v, then the time taken by the car to cover the distance AC=ADx on the highway
t1=ADxηv (1)
and the time taken to travel the distance CB in the field
t2=l2+x2v (2)
So, the total time elapsed to move the car from point A to B
t=t1+t2=ADxηv+l2+x2v
For t to be minimum
dtdx=0 or 1v[1η+xl2+x2]=0
or η2x2=l2+x2 or x=lη21.

A man in a car at location Q on a straight highway is moving with speed υ. He decides to reach a point P in a field at a distance d from the highway(point M) as shown in the figure. Speed of the car in the field is half to that on the highway. What should be the distance RM, so that the time taken to reach P is minimum?
