Question

From the following data of heats of combustion, find the heat of formation of CH3OH(l)

CH3OH(l)+32O2(g)CO2(g)+2H2O(l);rH=726kJ

C(s)+O2(g)CO2(g),ΔH=394kJ
H2(g)+12O2(g)H2O(l),ΔH=286kJ

Solution
Verified by Toppr

CH3OH(l)+32O2(g)CO2(g)+2H2O(l);rH=726kJ.........(i)

C(s)+O2(g)CO2(g),ΔH=394kJ........(ii)
H2(g)+12O2(g)H2O(l),ΔH=286kJ...........(iii)
On adding the equation as (ii)+2×(iii) we get
C(s)+2H2(g)+2O2(g)CO2(g)+2H2O(l)394+2×(286)=966kJ.........(iv)

Reversing the (i) reaction, we get

CO2(g)+2H2O(l)CH3OH(l)+32O2(g)+726kJ ........(v)
(iv) + (v)
C(s)+2H2(g)+12O2(g)CH3OH(l)966+726=240kJ
