The survey of India was started over hundred years ago. Surveyors mapped out the country on scales of 1, 2, 4 miles to the inch. But the most important is 1: 1,000,000 scale maps. These sheets are 4×4 degrees. The whole country is planned to be divided in 4 × 4 degree sheets, each being numbered as 39, 40, 41 etc. Sometimes the sheet is named after the most important town of the area covered by it. For instance, sheet no. 43 and 53 are also known as Srinagar and Delhi sheets respectively. In these sheets lettering is done in black, water in blue, contour in brown, and roads and town sites in red colour. These sheets have been published in two editions, (a) Political edition with administrative boundaries in colour and (b) Layered edition with graduated layers of colours to show altitude. These sheets are also known as 1/M sheets or one -in-million maps.
