The hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius), is a large, mostly herbivorous mammal in sub Sahara Africa and one of only two extant species in the family Hippopotamidae (the other is the pygmy hippopotamus). The name comes from the ancient Greek word for "river horse".
