How deforestation can lead to desertification?

Deforestation causes soil erosion or removal of fertile top layer of the soil.
As the upper fertile layer of soil is removed by erosion, the soil quality decreases day by day. And eventually converts it to a desert as the soil is no more suitable for plants.
