Fossil fuels are the major cause of air pollutants in the air. The
following air pollutants air released due to burning of fossil fuels.
(i)Oxides of sulphur: Fossil fuels contain sulphur. On combustion they
produce sulphur dioxide and sulphur trioxide. These oxides form
sulphuric acid and sulphurous acid in the atmosphere. These acids are
harmful and corrode the marble. (ii) Oxides of carbon: Fossil fuels
produce carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Both are noxious gases.
(iii) Oxides nitrogen: Nitrogen dioxide is a pungent gas and is produced
by the oxidation of nitric oxide. (iv)Particulate matter: Generated
from automobiles and industries. (v)Ethylene: It is produced from incomplete combustion of fossil fuels by automobiles.
