Question

How do you simplify $$3\cfrac { 1 }{ 3 } +2\cfrac { 4 }{ 5 } $$?

Solution
Verified by Toppr

$$3\cfrac { 1 }{ 3 } +2\cfrac { 4 }{ 5 } =3+2+\cfrac{1}{3}+\cfrac{4}{5}$$
Convert the fractions so they have the same denominators
$$=3+2+\cfrac{5}{15}+\cfrac{12}{15}$$
Add the fractions
$$=3+2+\cfrac{17}{15}$$
convert the improper fraction into a mixed fraction
$$=3+2+1+\cfrac{2}{15}$$
Add the integer terms
$$=6+\cfrac{2}{15}$$
write as a standard mixed fraction
$$=6\cfrac{2}{15}$$
