However, if cathode is made up of mercury, $$ Na-Hg$$ is the main product as $$Na$$ is soluble in $$Hg$$ and the over potential of on mercury. In such case, on hydrolysis $$NaOH$$ is obtained as main product.
$$2Na-Hg + 2H_2O \longrightarrow 2NaOH + 2Hg + H_2$$
