Question

If a dihybrid pea plant, heterozygous for flower colour (red dominant over white) and seed shape (round dominant over wrinkled) under goes selfing, the types of gametes produced are
  1. 2
  2. 4
  3. 8
  4. 16

A
2
B
16
C
4
D
8
Solution
Verified by Toppr

A total number of types of gamete produce by an organism is 2n, where n is the number of heterozygous genes present. Since given plant is heterozygous for two genes (flower colour and seed shape), thus total possible gametes by it = 22=4. Similarly, dihybrid, trihybrid and tetrahybrid plants are heterozygous for two, three and four genes respectively, thus total possible gametes= 22, 23 and 24=4, 8 and 16 respectively. Thus, the correct answer is option B.
