Question

If eyepiece lens of a compound microscope is moved a little away from objective lens without changing positions of object and objective lens, then
  1. image will not be formed
  2. final image will be real and erect with respect to the object
  3. Observer will see a sharp image
  4. final image will be diminished

A
final image will be diminished
B
Observer will see a sharp image
C
image will not be formed
D
final image will be real and erect with respect to the object
Solution
Verified by Toppr

The correct option is B final image will be real and erect with respect to the object
If eyepiece is moved a little farther than objective, then virtual image,A' formed by objective is formed beyond the focal point of eyepiece. Hence, eyepiece forms a real inverted image,I of A'. Since the image in inverted twice, the final image is real and erect considering O as object.
Real images are obtained on a screen and may not be seen clearly with naked eyes.
At both refractions, magnification occurs and hence final image is also magnified.

A 4 cm tall object is placed on the principal axis of convex lens. The distance of the object from the optical centre of the lens is 12 cm and its sharp image is formed at a distance of 24 cm from it on a screen on the other side of the lens. If the object is now moved a little away from the lens, in which way (towards the lens or away from the lens) will he have to move the screen to get a sharp image of the object on it again ? How will the magnification of the image be affected?
