Question

If one face of a prism of prism angle 30o and μ2 is silvered, the incident ray retraces its intial path. The angle of incidence is:
  1. 60o
  2. 30o
  3. 45o
  4. 90o

A
30o
B
60o
C
45o
D
90o
Solution
Verified by Toppr

For incident light ray to retrace it's initial path, it should fall normally on the silvered surface.
Given, prism angle, A=30
Let the angle of incidence be i

From the figure,
x=90A=60
x+r=90r=30
Thus, angle of refraction r=30

Now, applying Snell's law at the surface DE, we have
μ=Sin iSin r
Sin i=Sin r×μ
Sin i=Sin 30×2
i=Sin1(22)
i=Sin1(12)
i=45

Hence, the answer is OPTION C.
