Question

If the acceleration due to gravity g at the earth's surface is 9.8 ms2, mass of the earth 80 times that of moon and radius of the earth 4 times that of the moon, then the value of g at the moon's surface will approximately be :
  1. 4 m s2
  2. 1.96 m s2
  3. 27 m s2
  4. 16 m s2

A
27 m s2
B
16 m s2
C
4 m s2
D
1.96 m s2
Solution
Verified by Toppr

The correct option is B 1.96 m s2
Here, the acceleration at the earth's surface is g=ge=GMeR2e and the acceleration at the moon's surface is gm=GMmR2m
Here, Me=80Mm or Me/Mm=80 and Re=4Rm or Re/Rm=4
So, gmge=(Mm/Me)(Re/Rm)2=(1/80)(4)2=0.2
or gm=0.2g=0.2(9.8)=1.96m/s2
