Question

In a triangle ABC, if the median AD through A is perpendicular to AB, then AD is equal to:
  1. ctanB
  2. ctanA
  3. 2ctanA
  4. c2tanA

A
c2tanA
B
ctanB
C
ctanA
D
2ctanA
Solution
Verified by Toppr

For ACD, use sine rule.
a2sin(A90)=ADsinC
But, C=180(A+B)
and from ABD,AD=a2sinB
so, a2sin(A90)=a2sinBsin{180(A+B)}
sinBsin((A+B)=1cosA
sinBcosA=[sinAcosB+cosAsinB]
tanA+2tanB=01
From ABD,tanB=ADAB
AD=c×tanB
from 1 no equation, tanB=12tanA
So, AD=c2tanA.
