Question

In a Zener regulated power supply of a Zener diode with V2=6V is used for regulation. The load current is to be 4mA and the unregulated input is 10V. The value of series resistor RS is (Assume Iz=5IL):
  1. less than 5 Ω
  2. Infinite
  3. greater than 100 Ω
  4. zero

A
Infinite
B
zero
C
less than 5 Ω
D
greater than 100 Ω
Solution
Verified by Toppr

Given,
vz=6v
Load current=4mA=IL
unregulated input=10V
To find: value of series resistance Rs=?
Solution:
I=IZ+IL
IZ=5IL (Given)
IZ=5×4=20mA
I=20+4=24mA

Voltage drop across Rs is
Vs=106=4V
Therefore Rs=424mA=167r

i.e., Rs is greater than 100r.
